Ivan Bohun by AtreJane Ivan Bohun by AtreJane
Commission for :iconwhisper-of-night:
Holy shit..I thought I would never end this art...
It is really difficult to draw historical persons ^^;
For example I re-draw the head fully..First version was so stupid... Face was as of the priest XD

So...
I decided to look more information about him..and I have now two questions:
1. Why did Sienkiewicz show him as the man of the common people_ who could not read and write..
2. Why did Hoffman call him Jurko in his movie?

Small Information:

Ivan Teodorovych (in other books Fedorovich) Bohun
26.05.1618 - 27.02.1664

Ivan Bohun was born in the family of Ukrainian shliachta. His family was not very rich, but it was enough to give Ivan good education.
So Ivan could read and write ^^;

Till 1648 nothing is clear what Ivan's life was... As we know he was in register Cossacks... in 1637-1642 took part in the fights of Ukrainians against Turkish attacks on the city Azov.

After 1648 he joined to Chmelnitskiy in uprising against Poland.
Ivan Bogun was always oppositionist. When Chmelnitskiy decided to give Ukraine to Moscow Principality (later Russia), Ivan Bohun organised the anti-moscow Opposition with Ivan Sirko and Petro Doroshenko and ardently spoke against signing of Pereyslav Rada, where Chmelnitski signed the sublimation to Moscow...

After death of Chmelnitski, Ivan Bohun support the politic of Ivan Vygovski and Jurij Chmelnitski on the way of Ukrainian independence from Moscow...
But when he discovered that these two were planning to built independence through the approach with Poland again and even with Turkey, he took position of Oppositionist again, because he thought that Ukraine had to be as independent country without unions, submissions and approaching...
Ivan did not sign the document of Vygovski and the Jurij Chmelnitski's document...

In 1662 Ivan Bohun was prisoned by Polish government.
Jan Kazymir II gave Bohun freedom as exchange.. Bohun had to help Poles in the campaign to the East Ukraine.
But in 1664 Bohun was blamed in the cooperation with moscovians (later russians) and was condemned to death...
But this fact is still great historical secret..
Yes, Jan Kazymir wrote in the letter that he was informed by Bogun's surroundings that Bohun was leading anti-polish politic in those campaign...
But..The death of Bohun is still secret..
One of version, he was captured, and as opposition he was against this capturing, Poles, Moscovians and he was killed by his own surroundings...

Anyway, the fact is:

27.02.1664 Ivan Bohun was shot in the age of 46 and was buried in Novgorod-Siverskiy.

His famous words were:
"Не схилюсь ні перед ким, окрім як перед Господом Богом, та й то тільки з доброї волі!"

Translation:
"I will never bow down to anyone.. I will bow down only to the God...and only because It will be my own wish to do this"...

After Ivan there was left his son Grygorij, and the grandson Leontij..
All other his heirs are unknown...
On the place of his execution there is symbolic grave...where people still bring the flowers...

Тут все і строге, і прекрасне,
Тут гарт і музики струна.
Вогонь в цій кузні не погасне -
Тут чути подих Богуна.

p.s. he was real hero of Ukraine as for me...

But my people as always, my people make heroes from betrayers, finding the acquittal for their deeds always, and real heroes are not supported, while those heroes are alive and tries to make smth...

omg, rly nice art o.O
I love hoffman movie, and Bohun in my favorite character- so tragic for me.
1.I think, in movie hoffman show him as from 'common people', to be opposition figure to Skrzetuski.
2. he call Bohun "Jurko" because the film is based on the book "Ogniem i Mieczem", and a literary character of the Sienkiewicz novel is modeled on your Colonel Cossack Ivan Bogun. [link]
I hope I wrote understandable ;P
btw. great art: fav <3
